Root Canal Therapy:

What is a Root Canal?

Don’t be concerned if we prescribe a root canal procedure to treat a damaged or diseased tooth. Millions of treated and saved this way each year, relieving pain and making teeth healthy again.

Root canal therapy is necessary when the inside of your tooth (the pulp) becomes inflamed or infected as a result of deep decay, or trauma caused by tooth fracture. In the case of deep caries or severe trauma the nerve tissue otherwise called the pulp becomes incredibly inflamed and can lead to infection. If left untreated this inflammation and later infection can cause severe pain or an abscess.

During root canal treatment, the inflamed or infected pulp tissue is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then sealed and filled with a material called gutta-percha.

What happens after the Root Canal?

Immediately following the root canal, Dr. Nubani may recommend a restoration like a crown to help prevent future tooth fracture. The procedure of a root canal requires removal of tooth structure that can leave the tooth susceptible to breaking, to prevent this from happening crowns are prescribed.

Alternative treatment?

Unfortunately, the only alternative to root canal therapy is extraction and replacement of the missing tooth with either a bridge, implant, or partial denture.
